At Ripplebrook Primary School we run a structured Reading Program. Each student is assessed at the beginning and at other regular intervals during the year in order to inform the teaching and learning that needs to take place for that child to grow. Over the course of a week every student has multiple opportunities to read texts which are appropriate for their abilities. These sessions aim to improve each student’s accuracy, fluency, comprehension and reading rate.
We use ‘Reading Power’ to discuss comprehension with our students and a shared language around this is developed throughout each child’s time at our school.
As well as using traditional readers and short books for reading instruction we also use electronic texts and maintain a subscription to Reading A-Z. This website allows students to access a wide range of electronic reading materials that are leveled from AA-Z (Fountas and Pinnell Leveling System).
Whilst teaching students the HOW of reading and ensuring they develop confidence with their own abilities, we also aim to develop within our students a LOVE of literature and reading itself. For this purpose we have a comprehensive library, employ the services of a specialised MARC (library van) teacher and include the use of both Australian and International literature in our teaching of all subject areas.
